Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta suffered a major head injury, but fortunately, it has been reported that his condition is stable.

Palace advanced to the quarter-finals after defeating Millwall 3-1 in the FA Cup Round of 16 for the 2024-25 season at Selhurst Park in London, England on March 1st (GMT+9). However, the joy of victory was short-lived as a horrific injury early in the game shocked everyone.

In the 8th minute, Mateta encountered a golden opportunity as he penetrated the opponent's defensive space. Just as he was about to create a one-on-one situation after receiving a perfect long pass from his teammate, Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts accidentally struck Mateta's head with his foot while attempting to clear the ball. The impact was severe. Mateta fell down bleeding from his head, and the stadium was instantly filled with tension.

Palace medical staff were urgently dispatched to check on Mateta's condition, and the situation appeared serious. An oxygen respirator was brought in, and eventually Mateta was carried out on a stretcher. This caused the game to be suspended for more than 7 minutes, and goalkeeper Roberts was immediately shown a red card and sent off.

British 'Talk Sport' commentator Scott Minto said it was a truly reckless action. It wasn't the chest or shoulder, but a hit to the head. This was a very dangerous and horrible challenge. Even if there was no malice, the tackle itself is a serious issue. He strongly criticized, saying he hopes Mateta can overcome it well.

Fortunately, Mateta quickly regained stability. Crystal Palace announced through an official statement that all test results were normal. Mateta received 25 stitches to suture the wound behind his ear. They stated that he will focus on recovery by resting for several days, and their medical team will closely monitor his condition.

Mateta also thanked everyone for their warm messages through his SNS. I'm fine. He sent a reassuring message to fans saying he will return stronger soon.

Mateta has been a key striker for Crystal Palace since the 2020-21 season, establishing himself as a core player with 12 goals and 2 assists in the league this season. Particularly in 2025, he was showing hot scoring form with 8 goals and 1 assist in 8 games. However, an unexpected injury in this match temporarily halted his momentum.

Palace fans desperately hope that Mateta will recover soon and return to the ground.
